Your roof is the largest surface your home shows to the sky, and here on the Space Coast it works harder than almost anywhere else in the United States. Direct, near vertical sun. Most days of the year. On top of heat and humidity that never fully lets go.
Every roof answers that in one of two ways. It either soaks up that energy or it sends some of it back.
That single difference is what a sun shingle is about, and it is why more homeowners are starting to ask for one by name.
What a sun shingle actually is
A standard architectural shingle is built to shed water, and it does that job well. What it was never designed to do is manage heat.
A sun shingle is built with solar reflective granules across its surface. Rather than absorbing as much of the sun’s energy, it reflects a larger share of it away. Less of that energy makes its way into the attic, which means the space directly above your ceilings starts every afternoon in a different place than it otherwise would.
You do not have to take our word for how much of your bill this is. Florida Power & Light says it plainly in their own heating and cooling guide: air conditioning your home “can account for more than 50 percent of your electric bill during peak cooling months.”
More than half. And your air conditioner has no idea how the heat got into your house. It only responds to how much of it is there. A roof that hands the attic less heat gives your system less to push back against.
We will not put a dollar figure on that, and you should be skeptical of anyone who does. Your insulation, your ventilation, your ductwork and your thermostat habits all move that number. What we will share with you is the mechanism, which is real, measurable, and the reason cool roofing exists as a category at all.
The part most people miss: starting cool is not the same as staying cool
This is where a lot of cool shingles quietly come undone.
A reflective roof only reflects while its surface stays light. In Florida, roofs go dark. Not from dirt, but from blue green algae, the same organism behind the black streaks you see running down shaded roof slopes all over Brevard. Algae is dark. As it spreads, it settles over exactly the granules that were doing the reflecting.
A cool roof that streaks stops being a cool roof. It just takes a few years before anyone notices.

The detail that decides whether the coverage is real
There is a condition attached to that algae protection that rarely makes it to the kitchen table.
The manufacturer’s algae resistance coverage exists only if the hip and ridge cap carries the same Scotchgard protection as the field shingles. Cap the roof with a standard ridge product instead, which happens more often than most homeowners would guess, and the coverage on the entire roof goes away.

What responsible really means here
A roof is not a decision you revisit often. Most homeowners will buy two or three in a lifetime, and the choice usually gets made in a single afternoon, under some pressure, with a number at the top of the page.
Being responsible about it does not mean spending the most. It means choosing for year fifteen instead of for this week. It means asking what the roof will look like once it is no longer new, what it is quietly doing to your power bill the entire time it is up there, and whether the paperwork in your drawer still means something by then.
That is a different conversation than “what does a roof cost.” It is also the one worth having.
Three questions worth asking any roofer
Ask us these. Then ask everyone else you get a price from.
- Is the algae protection actually 3M™ Scotchgard™ Protector, or the manufacturer’s own version? They are not the same product and they do not carry the same terms.
- Does the hip and ridge cap carry it too, or only the field shingles? This is the one that decides whether the coverage survives.
- How many years is the algae coverage, and what happens to it if I sell the house?
