Sebastian homeowners ask us about metal more every year. Here is how a Hippo metal roof works in Sebastian, what it costs against shingles, and which panel belongs on your house.
Metal roofing in Sebastian
Sebastian sits on the Indian River Lagoon at the top of Indian River County, and its neighborhoods, from the older homes near the riverfront and Sebastian Highlands to newer subdivisions west of US-1, are full of roofs installed in the 2000s building boom that are now due. Salt air off the lagoon reaches most of the city, so close to the water the Galvalume finish warranty carries a salt-water exclusion and aluminum is available as an upgrade. Hippo crews work Sebastian every week; it is not a special trip for us.
METAL ROOF SAME PRICE AS SHINGLES®
Most homeowners rule out metal on price before they ever get a number. At Hippo, price does not have to make that decision. We have built two flagship roof systems, our HippoShield™ shingle system and our DefenderRoof® metal system, and they are the same price. You see both, in writing, at the visit, and you choose the roof you would rather come home to.
Two ways to go metal
DefenderRoof exposed fastener panels
Ribbed panels fastened through the face with gasketed screws, in Galvalume steel or aluminum, in a wide range of colors. This is the system behind the same-price-as-shingles offer.
Standing seam
Concealed fasteners and clean vertical lines. Standing seam is a full replacement rather than an overlay, priced accordingly, and it is the roof many Sebastian homeowners choose when the house needs to look finished from the street.
What a Sebastian metal roof visit looks like
- We inspect the existing roof and the attic to confirm whether an overlay qualifies or a tear-off is the right call.
- We check the distance to salt water and recommend steel or aluminum accordingly.
- We bring color and profile samples.
- You get a written price for metal and for shingles side by side.
- Hippo pulls the permit through the City of Sebastian and meets the inspector.

Frequently asked questions
Can you install a metal roof over my existing shingles in Sebastian?
Often, yes. Florida code allows a new roof over one existing layer of shingles when the decking is sound, and your Roofing Consultant confirms that at the visit. Either way, the install method never decides the price: DefenderRoof® is the same price as our HippoShield™ shingle system on the same house.
Steel or aluminum for a Sebastian home?
Many Sebastian homes sit near salt water. Galvalume steel is still the panel behind METAL ROOF SAME PRICE AS SHINGLES® there, and homeowners put it on along the river and the beaches all the time. The one thing to know is that the panel manufacturer’s finish warranty carries a salt-water exclusion, so if you want that coverage near the water, aluminum is available as a priced upgrade. We confirm the distance to water at your visit and put the panel choice, and its price, in writing.
Do I need a permit for a metal roof in Sebastian?
Yes. Hippo pulls the permit through the City of Sebastian under our own license, CCC1331992, and meets the inspector on site.
How long does a metal roof last compared to shingles?
A properly installed metal roof commonly outlasts two or three shingle roofs, and it does not lose granules, curl or grow algae the way shingles do in the Florida sun. Ask us at your visit about the manufacturer warranty options on the panel you choose.
