Most Melbourne homeowners end up choosing between two roofs: shingle or metal. Both hold up well in Florida. They solve different problems, and they suit different houses and different people. Seeing two real jobs side by side makes the difference easier to picture than a spec sheet does, so here are two of ours.
Albert’s roof: shingle, and the right call
Albert W. lives in an HOA community with an architectural review committee. His home has a normal pitch, the neighborhood expects a traditional shingle look, and the committee has to approve the product and color on paper before anything happens. We handled the submission, tore off the old roof, and installed an architectural shingle in Rustic Black. It cleared the HOA the first time and it looks like it belongs on the street. Nicholas’s roof: metal, and the right call
Nicholas W.’s home has a 2:12 pitch, about as low as a shingle roof is allowed to go. On a slope that shallow, shingles fight an uphill battle against standing water. Metal earns its keep on low-slope roofs, on homes where the owner plans to stay a long time, and for anyone who wants to buy one roof and be done.
